Gone are the days when “mine is bigger than yours” used to be a thing of pride, now things have taken a 180 degree turn and “bigger” has been replaced by “thinner”. The “thinner” you have, more popular you become. At least it is working for Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Recently Samsung started a new tablet war by stating its new galaxy tab 10.1 as world’s thinnest tablet. This was a direct attack on Apple’s iPad 2 which was supposedly the thinnest tablet in the market. This claim is now being closely checked and been verified and discussed by various technology blogs across the internet. Few Apple fan boys are ridiculing this claim by posting images of iPad 2 and Galaxy lying side by side. Just have a look at this picture to know what I am saying.
In the above image, what you see at left is an iPad 2 and on the right is a Galaxy tab 10.1. By looking at this picture one can clearly perceive the fallacy of Samsung’s claim of thinnest tablet in the world. Apple’s iPad 2 is 8.8 mm thick and if we go by above picture of iPad vs 10.1, Samsung’s Galaxy tab should be some 1.5 mm -2 mm thicker than iPad 2. But the buck does not stop here.
Samsung is an electronic giant, if we compare total electronic good production power of Samsung, it will surpass Apple by a large margin. With such a magnitude of presence, does Samsung need to make such false claims? Answer is clear- it does not. To clear the doubts over thickness of Galaxy tabs we need to go through the entire history of Galaxy tablet 10.1.
Samsung first announced its Galaxy Tablet 10.1 and 8.9 in Mobile World Congress last February. At that time official specification for thickness of Galaxy tab 10.1 (model P7100 ) was 10.9 mm. On 2nd Mach Apple released its much awaited iPad 2 which has a usp of being the slimmest tablet in the market. This made Samsung to rethink the design of Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the result is a new slimmer (8.6 mm only) Galaxy tablet.
This slimming down came with a price though; Samsung had to downgrade the rear camera of Galaxy tab. That was a design requirement. Earlier Samsung planned to put a 8 Mpix camera in rear of Galaxy tab and a 2 Mpix camera in front. Now the rear camera is a 3 Mpix camera.
So the situation now is that Samsung has got 2 models for Galaxy tab 10.1, one called Galaxy Tab 10.1V and other just Galaxy tab 10.1. Galaxy tab 10.1V is of thickness 10.9 mm, and that is what you see in the above picture. Samsung is shipping the thicker model in UK and in various other European countries.
As a consumer of these devices, do we real care about if one tablet is a few hairs thicker or thinner than other tablet? of course not. All we care about a decent enough tablet which is faster, has truck loads of RAM and which has a error free and customizable, user friendly OS.
