Hippie Days: Tosh Village, Parvati Valley

Kheer Ganga was peaceful and picturesque delight but now I was seeking something more lively. After reaching Barshani, I had options of either heading towards Kasol or to Tosh. Kasol is a cute enough town to stay at in Parvati (a few kms before Manikaran) but it's also very touristic (and a Jewish enclave full of Israeli young people). Great food there though (tourist stuff). Tosh is a small village 5 km uphill from Barshani. Tosh is indeed the last village in this direction connected with road. I picked Tosh and started trekking uphill.

From Barshani, decent tar road goes uphill till Tosh and one can get a private taxi (200 INR) on this route. Alternatively, one can also trek to Tosh from a shorter trail which will take around 45 minutes from Barshani. Due to this road, Tosh is a preferred destination for lazy hippies. Unlike Kheer Ganga, Tosh is much populated and not surrounded by thick meadows. Trekking trail passes through ranches and unorganized plantation of Marijuana. Accommodation and food options are in surplus in Tosh and are in much better shape than what we find in Kheer Ganga.

Tosh lies on the slope of a mountain overlooking a river and a waterfall. Just after the local households, series of hotels appear at the end of the village. Distinct smell of Marijuana is the first impression of Tosh. While browsing for an accommodation, I came across to couple of hippie chicks and became excited about my stay in Tosh. Tosh is full of budget accommodation (300 INR per night) so finding one was not tiresome.
Temple in Tosh Village

After lodging, I strolled along the narrow lanes of the village which was so beautifully synched with two contrary side of civilization. There are plenty of smoke joints, food joints, pizza corner, tea stalls and restaurants. You may find it difficult to get typical Indian meal but will definitely get Israeli food everywhere in the village. Heading further, I had seen a group of hippies playing pink Floyd and smoking joints. It reminded me of scenes from the movie “Hare Rama, Hare Krishna”. Public display of affection was also at its extreme along with some broken hearted engaged in Yoga etc.
Small Dam and Waterfall near Tosh

Unlike Kheer Ganga, Tosh was more vibrant and open but you can’t get the real taste of Tosh until you are stoned.  I chatted with many travelers there and all of them were offering me the same thing…  Grass… I realized that there is no place for a sober in Tosh Most of them were long term travelers and were in Tosh for a while… and I believe they will remain there until bankruptcy... To break that real fiction, I took a walk uphill towards the water fall. There are two beautiful treks through the forest to a headland which offer amazing view of the waterfall and the river.

As it dusked, parties were much louder and overwhelming but being Sober was a major downside for me. It was ballet dancing, live music, good food and a lot of marijuana. Despite being a silent spectator, I enjoyed that evening the fullest. Parties were long…nights were longer…but clouds suddenly embraced the village of Tosh making the reality…a bit hazy or more than bit…  Sadly, all of us (including me) enjoy the misty reality of life…. Party continued and I hope someday this party will be over..  Short afterwards, I sank into the misty haze of pseudo sleep…
Town of Manikaran
                                        Town of Manikaran
Next morning was no different in Tosh with everyone again ramping up for the new day in the same way. To refresh from the hangover of last night, I choose to walk till the waterfall or to anywhere far from that maddening routine. Soon after I checked out... Greeted everyone…and descended back to Barshani…. Caught a bus back to Bhuntar (Via Manikaran, Kasol)… Without any prior plan, I got down at Kasol in the hope of spending some more time with an Israeli friend of mine whom I befriended in the bus only. Kasol is a beautiful town on the bank of river parvati and is generally the base camp of all the hippies. Kasol is the place from where they rent bikes, buy junk, hiking accessories etc etc. Kasol is blessed with better tourist facilities with restaurants dominated with Israeli food. We both roamed around the Kasol…had lunch while she was clearing her bills and then caught the bus to Bhuntar to continue our journeys. Our conversation revolved around various subjects such as life, traveling, love, relationships and hippie culture yet we never introduced each other…. Later we boarded busses to our respective destinations… Sadly to different directions (Geographically)… but I’ll remember that cute face with blue eyes behind those glasses…

am I stoned …!!!!

Places around Tosh/Parvati: Most of the tourist sites of Parvati valley are well documented in the map attached (Read Kheer Ganga blog). Here goes the attractions those were recommended to me by locals but I could not find them in the map.

Kugla: It is a one day trek from Tosh and quite suitable for skiing just after winters. During summers, this high land get blessed with rhododendron hence often referred as Valley of flower (of Parvati)

Crystal Mountain: Recently discovered mountain near Grahan. Trek starts from Kasol.
