I am planning to visit Darjeeling and gangtok in April-May 2013 with my family(H,W & 8Y kid) . I plan to reach New Jalpaiguri by train at 01:30 am on 29 April or 6th May. Return is planned on 6th or 13th May from new jalpaiguri at 01:20 am. I plan to take bus/taxi from new jalpaiguri to darjeeling and then from gangtok to new jalpaiguri on the return leg of my journey. We have 7 complete days.

But since we have a kid, may have to distribute/spread the sightseeing/ so that the kid enjoys every moment and does not get drained out.

We also plan to visit Lake Tsomgo & Nathula pass. Since Nathalu is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays only, I guess we may have to start with Darjeeling, stay there Monday n Tuesday before proceeding to Gangtok on Wednesday/Thurday.

I needed the advise of experts on your forum to know

1) If New Jalpaiguri has any accomodation options since my trains reach and depart at late hours 01:00 am

 2) If 7 full days is enough to complete my visit of darjeeling , gangtok & Natha Lu.

 3) How should I plan my itenerary for the 7 days of my visit so that I can get the best of these wonderful places.

 4) How soon do I have to requst for Nathula army permit and can it be done from Mumbai or only after reaching Gangtok

Hi Kishor,
First of all, I would like to Thank you for starting this thread and signing up with Thinking Particle... Here are my inputs on your queries..

1) New Jalpaiguri has all kind of accommodation facilities and there are hotels near railway station. As your train is departing late night, you may try to spend some time in the rooms available within station premises.. else you may opt for any nearby hotel... It won't be a problem finding accommodation in Jalpaiguri...

2) 7 Days are sufficient to have a leisure time in Darjeeling and around Gangtok... Nathula, Changu lake is just a one day tour from Gangtok...

3) I think you are already on a right track keeping Darjeeling in the beginning and then heading towards Gangtok... Darjeeling and city sightseeing may take 2 days and same goes with Gangtok... You will need one day for Nathula tour...

4) Getting permit for Nathula is hassle free job.. After arriving at Gangtok, get in touch with any tour operator and they will arrange the permits for you... If you are contacting the tour operators in the evening then you will get the permit in the morning... You can yourself also apply for permit at Sikkim Tourism department office...

I hope it's helpful...

Regards
Vishnu Kumar

I am also planing to visit the same(Darjeeling/Gangtok)with my friend in next month but in short time.
We have only 2 full days that we can use.
So what/where you actually suggest me to visit within this short duration or do u think its a stupid idea to visit with only 2 days in hand???
If its not that bad can u tell me the places I can visit.

Hi Rahul,
2 days are really short period to visit Darjeeling or Gangtok but still It's fine to visit one of these towns. I will suggest you visit Gangtok...do Gangtok sightseeing and if possible you can do one day tour to Nathula pass, Changu lake etc...

No need to include 2 destinations for such a short trip..

Hi Rajiv,
June first week is not a bad time to venture to Sikkim... Monsoon start approaching but first week is generally fine...

** Changu lake should be fine to visit with 4 and half year old... for Nathula pass, please assess it once you reach Changu...

For hotels etc, I will suggest you to go to the link below..

Hi Anand,
I don't see any necessity to book the vehicles in advance however booking hotels in advance at Gangtok is fine as its your honeymoon trip and there is no point of creating hassle for getting an accommodation. Once you reach Gangtok, you can arrange vehicles and even book the hotels for your onwards overnight stops.

Your itinerary seems fine to me except Day 5 in which you planned to move to Pelling from Lachung after visiting yumthang. It will be a hectic day of travel. Still very much do-able with your private taxi/

Rest everything seems perfect with the itinerary.

Enjoy your honeymoon..

Cheers

We are going thru sterling holidays & the accommodation available is like 29th & 30th we can spend in Gangtok & on 31st we have to come back to Darjeeling for rest of the days Kindly give me advice regarding the trip that how we can avail the rooms of sterling holidays & where we have to arrange for the hotels ourselves as we have 7 nights & 8 days programme

Hi Anal,
Sadly i don't have any idea about sterling holidays and the way they work. However in terms of attraction in and around Gangtok/Darjeeling, please go through the forum and you will find handful of sample itineraries. 2 days are little less in Gangtok if you are planning to do Nathula pass, Changu lake etc however its do-able....For an itinerary for 7 nights, you can include more destinations perhaps from North Sikkim or Stop over Kalimpong....Accommodation should be available but its holiday season so its good to do it in advance...

I have heard that the roads to Lachen and Lachung are closed in February and that they open only after March 15th.

I had planned to go there there on 20th Feb.

What are the chances of the roads being blocked to Lachung, Lachen and Yumthang in mid-Feb?

I am going on a honeymoon trip and do not want to get stuck somewhere.

Thanks in advance

Hi Anand,
January, February are pretty much unpredictable for this part of Sikkim... Chances to visit North Sikkim (Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang) are bleak due to heavy snow on the road however it does not get officially closed but traffic gets blocked for weeks some times...

I have seen travelers making to Lachen, Lachung in February but that depends on your luck.... If you are not up to take this risk then you stay in Gangtok and visit Nathula pass, Changu lake etc...

Route accessibility can not be predicted once you are in Gangtok....Chances are not bright though for the month of February...

Have an awesome honeymoon...

Hi Vishnu,

I have visited your page incidentally and found that it is the place which I should have visited earlier. Why we should take packages from tour operator because it generally overcharged one only.

Please help me in chalking out a perfect Sikkim trip. I have complete 7-8 Days.

I am planning this in month of June 2013, we have five adults and 1 Kid.

Thanks,

Hi Shailendra,
We already discussed a lot of sample itineraries in this forum.... June is the perfect time to visit in terms of accessibility.... Will suggest you to check those itineraries..

You can spend 3 days in North Sikkim ( Yumthang, Zero Point, Gurudongmar lake)...1 day in East Sikkim ( Nathula etc)....1 Day Gangtok Sightseeing...and even include Darjeeling or Peeling if you get more time...

Hi

I am planning to visit Darjeeling and Sikkim (mainly around Gangtok and North Sikkim) in May 2013. We are six of us with a mix of all ages - my parents (70, 65 yrs), me an wife (35-40) and my kids (9 and 11). My high level itinerary :

19 Sun Reach Bagdogra by 2:30 pm. Leave for Darjeeling & stay in DJ
20 Mon Darjeeling sight seeing
21 Tue Morning Darjeeling - Gangtok
22 Wed Gangtok Nathula Pass, Tsomgo lake
23 Thu Gantok city tour. Overnight in Gangtok
24 Fri Gangtok - Lachung. Overnight stay in Lachung
25 Sat Early morning start for Yumthang valley, Shingba sanctury, etc
26 Sun Lachung -Siliguru Stay in Siliguri
27 Mon reach Kolkata from Bagdogra
28 Tue Kolkata sight seeing
29 Wed Kolkata to back home
Please advise this is okay specially 19th...is it okay to leave after2:30pm to reach Darjeeling. You may want to suggest some changes/comment on the plan, given that I am trying to cover Darjeeling, Gangtok and North Sikkim. More once the basic plan is okay.

Warm Regards

Hi Vaibhav,
I don't see any problem with your itinerary except with 26th which is going to be a hectic day but manageable....
Siliguri to Darjeeling is well connected so getting public transport after 02:30 PM should not be a problem....

Your plan seems perfect and all green from my side...

Is there any alternative to 26th plan. I am catching a flight to Kol from Bagdogra on 27th afternoon (14.20 to be precise). Would coming back to Gangtok (from Lachung) on 26th be better and then leave early morning from Gangtok to Bagdogra on 27th ? But then 27th would be hectic and too close for a buffer considering that I am travelling with kids and leaving very early could possibly be a problem. Let me know your views.

Also would like to know how much and what can I cover on 25th...other than Yumthang valley and Shinba Sanctury.

Hi Vaibhav,
Lachung to Siliguri is very much do-able as a one day journey... All i was feeling it hectic considering the age of your parents... You can do this stretch in 8-9 hours with private taxi.... Start early in the morning (7:00 AM) from Lachung and then you will be easily at Siliguri by evening...

You can keep the original plan....  You itinerary is already very light...

Hi Vishnu

Thanks for your comments. I have kept the plan light considering the age mix in our travel group i.e. my family. Adding more details now."

"24 Fri Gangtok - Lachung. Overnight stay in Lachung
25 Sat Early morning start for Yumthang valley, Shingba sanctury, etc
26 Sun Lachung -Siliguru Stay in Siliguri"

1. Please suggest what more could be done on 25th other than Yumthang valley, Shingba sanctury.
2. Would an advance booking of hotel in Lanchung (for that matter all he places of stay) be recommened in my case as I would be travelling during peak season. What cost do you think is the cap considering I book the best facility available in North Sikkim.
3. What should be the circa cost of booking a private taxi (Scorpio or likes) for my Noth Sikkim tour i.e. Gangtok-North Sikkim - Siliguru. I do understand that they would be negotiable. A close estimate here should help.

Wam Regards

Dear Vishnu,
This site has been extremely useful in planning my trip to Sikkim - Gangtok, Yumthang Valley, Gurudogmar Lake and Zero point and Nathula pass.

I intend to be there in the 2nd half of May - between 15th May -30th May

1) At which of the above places, snow will be accessible. I visited Kashmir earlier during May-June and hardly found snow. One of the primary purpose of the visit is to show snow to my kid.

2) Is Pelling, Melli (I want to do white water rafting), Kalimpong and reaching Darjeeling, doable in a day in a private taxi?

Thanks

Hi Amit,
Glad to know that you find it helpful....

1) Finding Snow  in the month of May is bit tricky... you need to visit high altitude places.... I still think there are chances around Nathula and Zero point.... Chances are more towards Gurudongmar lake...

2) It will be very very hectic to do all these places in a single day..

Hello Vishnu,

I am planning of visiting Darjeeling, Sikkim during the Ist week of May. I would be coming in my own Car (Alto).  Would need some inputs to places which I can easily visit with my Car and the places where I have to hire vehicle. I am planning for a 7 day trip and will be accompanied my family of 3. I want my son to experience the hills. So am planning a relaxed tour. Can you suggest the itenary for me. Also how can I manage the permits required to travel by my own car.

Thanks in advance

Hi Jose....
Alto is indeed one of the best car for these roads... I have seen lot many Altos plying in Himalayas... It has got decent ground clearance....

Permits for Nathula with your own car can be tricky but i believe it should be easily gettable....

You can see any of the itinerary suggested by me.... I don't think you can really visit Gurudongmar by Alto.... Road is treacherous beyond Thangu...

First Week of May is good time to visit Sikkim.... Most of the places will be accessible during this time of the year.... opportunity to touch snow will be less but still you will have chance in North Sikkim (Near Zero point)..... Pick any itinerary which suits you....  If you have any specific question, feel free to drop....

Hi Arti,
With private taxi, it should take around 4 hours to reach Pelling from Bagdogra Airport....

Zero Point should not be a problem during April.... you can make it...

You can do white water rafting in Teesta River on the way to Gangtok...

Hi Giridhar,
Making itinerary from the scratch will be tricky... Please make an initial draft and then I may help further... Here is my take on your queries...

Stay option in Gangtok: Some are suggested here from fellow travelers..

http://thinkingparticle.com/forum/valuable-inputs-travelers-gangtok-sikkim

Visiting North Sikkim with Kids should not be problem.... Zero point is however at quite an elevation... Rest other places are pleasant... It is generally 2 days itinerary with one night stay in Lachung...

You may find snow around Nathula pass or zero point....

Rest everything should be OK...

Hi Giridhar,
My take on the tentative itinerary....

1st May: It should be possible....

2nd May: You are visit all the sites of Gangtok on 3rd May. You can visit some of those on 2nd after arranging the permits..

3rd May: It should be possible.

5th May: It is not recommended to visit North Sikkim as a one day trip...I will suggest you to stay overnight in Lachung and keep it as 2 day & 1 night trip.... Lachung to Gangtok should be 10 hours of journey by private taxi...

It is possible to reach NJP at 7:30 PM if you are starting very early in the morning from Lachung (around 6:30 AM).....

You need to make some changes in your north Sikkim plan... rest everything seems fine to me..

Hi Ann,
Congratulation for doing the remarkable work with the background of the itinerary.... One of those rare itineraries where everything is possible and very well planned... nothing too hectic...

On Day 8 in Darjeeling, you can do following points..

Visit Tiger Hill ,on way back visit Ghoom Monastery, Batasia Loop and back to hotel. After breakfast proceed for visit 7 points ,covering The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, PNZ Zoological Park Tenzing Rock, Tibetans Refuge Centre , Tea Garden (outer view), Japanese Temple, Peace Pagoda & Ropeway )

My only concern is visiting Gurudongmar lake with your mother who is 68 years old... Gurudongmar lake is quite an altitude....nearly 18000 feet.... Acute mountain sickness is very common.... just think over it once....rest everything is perfect....

Regards
Vishnu Kumar
