Hello

We 2 are coming to Sikkim this month. A Gangtok-Pelling-Darjeeling itinary is somewat formed by us. Hope you help us to clear the following doubts

After Gangtok we are going to pelling. Is there any interesting places en-route to be seen? If places are there I am planning to hire an exclusive vehicle or If nothing to be seen shared vehicles are enough. right ? Or the shared ones allow sightseeing ?

Same with the case of Pelling Darjeeling (our next destination) journey also. Is there some good sights that can be missed in a shared jeep and can be covered in a private taxi ?

Hope you will help us with your valuable inputs

Regards

Biju

Hi,

We are planning a trip to sikkim in the 1st week of june (2-9 June), 3- 5 ppl. We wish to see unexplored places.

Our current itinerary is:
2nd june : Bagdogra to Darjeeling...
3rd June : Darjeeling sight scene
4th June : kalimpong river rafting
5th June : Nathula, Lachen, thangu
6th June : Gangtok sight scene
7th June : yumthang valley
8th June : Not planned ... Evening back to Bagdogra

We also wish to see Gurudongmar and Pelling. Can you please suggest.

Also, can you recommend someone who can help us plan the trip (accomodation and travel).

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Priti

Hi Priti,
I can see some huge gaps in your itinerary. I believe you will be reaching Gangtok on 4th June. On 5th June (Wednesday), you should try to visit Nathula, Changu lake and on 6th you should proceed to North Sikkim and stay overnight at Thangu. On 7th, you can visit Gurudongmar Lake and return to Lachung (stay overnight). on 8th, you can visit Yumthang and return back to Gangtok-Bagdogra.

But seems like you can only stay one night in North Sikkim. In that case, you will have to either pick Yumthang or Gurudongmar Lake.

I hope i clarified the gaps.

Hi Priti,

I returned from darjeeling n sikkim trip last week. would like to add few tips on ur itenary.

U have 7 days in all n it might be very tiring the way u have planned (as u have to include travel time from one place to other).

To leave for Nathula on 5th, u will have to reach gangtok by evening to get the permit for ur journey ( if u get any tour operator to do it so late u would be lucky... in our case v had to do it by late morning for next day travel. carry 4-6 passport photos for both nathula n north sikkim permit with address identity proof)

weather at Nathula was very cold. U will get overcoats n gumboots on hire on way... do take them.

North sikkim - IF GURUDONGMAR lake is in ur itenary then u have to go for 2 nights n 3 days package, else only 1 night for yumthang valley.... Do look into ur time n then go for it...

If u r a nature enthusiast then  DO NOT MISS Gurudongmar.... :)

we had 10 days at sikkim, still could not visit pelling/ kalimpong. Hope this info is of some help...

Regards,

Poornima.

For 7 days in Sikkim, i would suggest Pelling and Gangtok. Are you also planning Darjeeling ?.

Hi Biju,
I could not remember anything explicit about Gangtok-Pelling route. However the entire stretch is scenic. Getting a private taxi will be an expensive affair in comparison to shared one.

Similarly Peeling-Darjeeling route is also scenic but nothing specific enroute to stop for a while. If you are flexible on money terms then you can hire a private taxi to enjoy it the fullest.

Dear guest,

it is better advised to prebook cab and accomodation for a hassle free tour.

you can  book the cabs from cab providers directly and that will cost you less then booking from the hotel..

thank you and regards,

Hi Saurabh,
January is peak time for snow-fall so chances are bleak to make it till Nathula pass... Changu lake however remains connected but that too gets inaccessible in case of heavy snow...

Following link will give you some idea on fare etc..

Hi Mohis.... You have done excellent work with the research.... but I was surprised to see your itinerary for december 10th....  first of all, Gurudongmar won't be accessible during December... Even if it is then also it's not possible to visit Zero point in the morning and then visit Gurudonmgar same day and reach Darjeeling by evening.... too too hectic...

Gurudongmar is at very high altitude and generally recommended to visit during first half of the day....

skip Gurudongmar lake from the plan...rest is prefect...

Enjoy your honeymoon the fullest....

Hi Vishnu,

Thanks a lot for the inputs.

I am travelling Darjeeling on 11th.

So is it possible to cover Zero Point and Gurudongmar lake on same day (i.e on 10th)

From where you are planning to start for Darjeeling.... Zero point and Gurudongmar lake are on two different sides...not recommended to club for a single day trip...

Stay overnight at Thangu/Lachen and then visit Gurudongmar early in the morning.... after visiting Gurudongmar you can start for Darjeeling...

I would suggest you stay in Lachen/Thangu on 9th and visit Gurudongmar on 10th morning..

Stay in Lachung for 10th evening and then visit Zero point on 11th morning and keep driving back to Darjeeling...

Vishnu

Hi,
First would like to tell you that all information mention on this forum is very useful. Thanks for that.

We are planning to go in May 2014 & total members are 7. Here is my plan mention below;

Day 1: Will reach @ NJP on approx 9.10 PM. Proceed to Darjeeling by prepaid taxi.

Day 2: 3-Point Tour (4am-7:30am) Tiger Hill, Ghoom Monastery, Batasia Loop and the War Memorial,7 points tour (2 pm to 5.30 pm) Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the Zoo, Darjeeling Ropeway, Tenzing & Gombu Rock, Happy Valley Tea Estate, Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center, Lebong Race Course, Gorkha Football Stadium.

Day 3: 5 points tour (9.00 AM - 12 Noon )- Japanese Temple & Peace Pagoda, Lalkuthi or Lal Kothi, Dhirdham Temple, Ava Art Gallery, Bengal natural history museum.Rock Garden & Gangamaya Park. 2pm-5pm

Day 4: After breakfast proceed to Gangtok via Kalimpong. Proceed for excursion tour of Tsomgo Lakeand Baba Mandir. Nathulla.

Day 5: After breakfast, proceed to visit Handicraft Centre, Flower Show, Tibetology and Ropeway. After lunch, proceed to visit Ranka Monastery and Banjhakri Water Falls/ Gardens. Evening free for shopping.

So my questions to you is;

1. Is above mention plan is correct?
2. I have to organise a local tour operator for both the place or can i do by myself?
3. Can you suggest me any budget hotel in gangtok.

Hoping for your reply...

Hi... Glad to hear that you found thinking particle useful...

I would say you have done quite homework before outlining this itinerary.... I don't see any problem with Darjeeling part but Day 4 will get very hectic... Traveling from Darjeeling to Gangtok and then Nathula tour...

Nathula pass, Changu lake, Baba mandir is a one day tour from Gangtok... most of the travelers start early in the morning...

Nathula tour also requires permit which can be arranged with the help of any tour operator in gangtok... I would suggest to switch plan between Day 4 and Day 5... You should also keep in mind that

"Only Indian nationals can visit Nathula pass on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays"

Coming to your remaining queries..

1) I found some issues with the itinerary for Gangtok...mentioned above

2) For Nathula you may need help from tour operator... Rest you can either hire a private vehicle or use city transport...

3) Following link may help with hotels in Gangtok..

Chances are bright to witness Snow-fall but its all on nature's mercy.... can not guarantee that...

very difficult to pick between Darjeeling and Gangtok... I generally recommend travelers to visit both..

Hi,

I will reach NJP railway station on 21st February, 2014. I and planning to tour sikkim and near by places with my wife for around 6 - 7 Days in February 3rd week (I am despirate to visit Nathula pass), I can stretch for an extra day if 7 days are not sufficient to cover best places around.

Can you please suggest best places to vist during my stay, It would be great if you can share the best itenary and how much it will cost for hotels, vehicle and food etc and also what precautions to be taken during my visit.

Will it be good if I approach tour operator or is it easy to manage once I reach there? If you suggest to go for tour operator can you please suggest best tour planner or if you suggest to manage myself what care to be taken for booking hotels and vehicle for ssight seeings.

Thanks in advance!

Looking for reply at earliest.

Best Regards,
Santosh

February will be cold and some of the roads might be closed...  Accessibility to Nathula entirely depends on the snow situation... if it snows a lot then you may not be able to reach Nathula pass..

6-7 days are sufficient if you are planning to visit Gangtok, Nathula pass and North Sikkim..

I would recommend 2 days in Gangtok with one day tour to Nathula pass

2 days you can spend in North Sikkim...

If snow is blocking the routes then an excursion to West Sikkim would be a good option.. you can go to Pelling side and spend 2 days there....

February should not be very crowded so there is no need to book hotels in advance... Vehicles can be arranged once you reach there... Get in touch with any local tour operator for Nathula pass and North Sikkim tour...  You can connect with tour operators after arriving at Gangtok...

Vishnu Kumar

Hi Santosh... Itinerary seems OK to me and very much do-able however accessibility depends a lot on snow-conditions...

I can not comment much on the quotation part but 36K for 2 people for 6N is a reasonable deal... As your trip is in February so will recommend you to carry enough woolens...

Hi Gita,

Sorry for late reply.

First of all I am very thankful to Vijay and Vishnu who contributed a lot thru this forum and made very easy for first time travellers to sikkim and near by places.

Due to medical emergency at home I canceled my trip 15 days prior to travel but later everything was okay and I decided to go with my own plan without any bookings (for Silk route I booked thru agent 5 days b4). I visited Old Silk route, Gangtok, Darjeeling and Mirik.

Old silk route is best of my tour and we stayed 1 night in Padamchen and 1 night in Nathang. Nathang was cold desert in February which temperatures dropped to sub zero even in day time and we don't know how we survived one day and night :) just counted when it will be next day morning and when we will leave that place but we enjoyed a lot and there are no words to explain about the lakes, valleys in the Silk Route.

In the month of May temperatures will be pleasant. You have not given how many days u r planning for.

East Sikkim for old silk route, Sunrise points, lakes, Nathula, Valleys, Temples and Monastreys.

North Sikkim for nature lovers and very high altitudes.

West Sikkim for closest view of mountain ranges and also char dham.

South Sikkim for panaromic views and Tea gardens.

As you are travelling with you parents I suggest you to visit East Sikkim, North Sikkim till Yumthang and West/South Sikkim of your choices.

For Sight seeings in Darjeeling and Gangtok you can go for mix point sight seeing as visiting all the points are not worth and you will have less time to enjoy the places which are really worth.

If you have less time you can skip Darjeeling as Gangtok is better place as per my view.

You can hire small vehicle for transfer from one place to other place, sight seeings in Darjeeling and Gangtok. From Gangtok to Nathula / Yumthang transfers and sight seeing you have to hire heavy vehicle.

You need to arrange permits for travelling East Sikkim and North Sikkim.

Let me know if you need any info.

Enjoy the trip :)

Hi Rudra,
5 days are too less to cover all the places... you can visit pelling, Gangtok and have a day tour to Nathula  pass (towards tibet border).....

November is holiday season so it may get touristy however there is really not a need to book a hotel in advance...

let me know if you have any question...

Hi Nilesh... 12 nights and 13 days are good number of days for a comprehensive tour to Sikkim and nearby...

I would suggest you guys something like following sort..

1) Start from Mirik side.. Overnight stay in Darjeeling and spend 2-3 nights there...
2) Drive to Kalimpong and Gangtok... Spend 2-3 nights in in Gangtok and visit Nathula pass.
3) Drive towards North Sikkim and spend 2-3 nights in Lachen/Lachung... visit Yumthang valley, Gurudongmar lake etc..
4) come back to Gangtok and go towards West Sikkim (Pelling and nearby villages)...

Vegetarian food should not be a problem in entire Sikkim... You can get some really good restaurants in Dajreeling and Gangtok...

Total travel expense will depend a lot on the kind of accommodation you opt and kind of transport you avail.... April is tourist season so hotels will be little bit costly...

If you are hiring a private car for entire tour then cost might go little bit up.

it is very much possible to take white water rafting on the way to Darjeeling. You can do rafting at Teesta or Mille.

"2. On 24/05/2014, Can we take the 8 am Joyride in Darjeeling before proceeding to Gangtok"

Thank you very much Vijay.. So nice to see your reply.

Kindly let me clarify some mor doubts:

1. Kindly confirm whether the following tour schedule is OK or not. In case, if you suggest any correction or alternate, it would be highly appreciable.

17/05/2014    Saturday    Reaching Kolkata @ 19:15 hrs By emirates from Nigeria.
18/05/2014    Sunday    Sunderbhan Jungle camp
19/05/2014    Monday    Sunderbhan Jungle camp
20/05/2014    Tuesday    Sunderbhan Jungle camp reaching CCU @7pm
21/05/2014    Wednesday    Kolkata local sigh seeing    Full day      To book evening train to New Jaipaiguri 10:05 pm train
22/05/2014    Thursday    Reaching Jaipaiguri @07:45 hrs    Siluguri to Darjeeling via water rafting    To be booked in advance
23/05/2014    Friday    Darjeeling sight seeing
24/05/2014    Saturday    Darjeeling to Gangtok and 1/2 day sight seeing
25/05/2014    Sunday    Gangtok ( tasomo lake and natula pass
26/05/2014    Monday    Gangtok to Lachung    "Package to visit Lachung, Yamthang and Lachung. "
27/05/2014    Tuesday    Lachung to Gangtok
28/05/2014    Wednesday    Leaving Gangtok to Bagdogra and to Chennai    Leave by helicopter 11:35am    and catching flight by 16:45 hrs.

2. During the 22/05/2014 white water rafting, from this I understand that we need to take taxi for full day and request them to wait at teesta. What would be the cost of the taxi to drop darjeeling after water rafting from NJP station

3. Is it safe to keep the luggage in the taxi ?

4. Can we book the helicopter ticket once we reach Gangtok for return.

5. I hope Natula pass permit and zero point permit can be obtained in evening on 24/05/2014. please cofirm.

Jayashankar

Hi Jaya... Here is my take on your remaining queries...

1) Itinerary seems very much do-able however 26th and 27th are going to be little hectic.

2) you should book a private taxi to Darjeeling and ask the driver to stop at rafting site. There will be little additional charges for waiting. I think 4500-5000 INR should be taxi charges including waiting.

3) YES, its safe to keep luggage in the taxi or place those at rafting organizer office itself.

4) YES, permit can be arranged on 24th evening.
